Red Sox Digest: 2026 Final Report Card — Part 2: The Outfield
Rafaela and Abreu deliver, Duran falls flat, and Anthony leaves unfinished business: grading Boston’s outfield, with every appearance accounted for.

Boston’s outfield could take away a double, throw somebody out, and make you wonder how that much athleticism fit on one patch of grass. Then the same group would come to the plate and make scoring three runs feel like a capital project.
That is the problem with grading this bunch. There were real strengths here. Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu gave Boston substantial everyday value. There were also enormous gaps between what the lineup needed and what it received. Jarren Duran played almost every day without producing like an everyday offensive weapon. Roman Anthony’s season became another exercise in waiting for the player Boston thought it would have.
Welcome to Part 2 of the 2026 Final Report Card. We have graded the pitching staff. Now we move to the grass patrol: the regulars, the part-timers, and everyone who actually played an outfield position for the major-league club.
How we grade: Production, defense, availability, role, and expectations all count. These are Boston-only regular-season batting totals, including at-bats taken as a designated hitter; the outfield appearances are listed separately. A player who changed positions during a game can appear in more than one position’s total. For this installment, fewer than 100 Boston plate appearances means Incomplete, whether the brief results were terrific or terrible. That leaves five graded players and three short-stint evaluations. Injuries provide context; they do not turn a substantial playing sample into a season that never happened.

Rafaela gave Boston the most encouraging kind of progress: improvement in the part of his game that…
